Victor Bengtsson

Victor Bengtsson is a Danish contemporary artist, born in Copenhagen in 1997, where he continues to live and work. Interestingly, alongside his artistic practice, Bengtsson studied medicine at the University of Copenhagen, completing a BA in Medicine in 2023. His scientific background has become an important influence on his artistic universe.
Bengtsson is known for his distinctive figurative and surreal paintings, often created with oil paint rubbed directly into untreated jute or canvas. This technique gives his works a raw, textile-like surface and an almost historical appearance, reminiscent of old tapestries and frescoes.
His paintings combine nature, mythology, medicine and science, frequently depicting strange transformations between humans, animals and plants. His medical studies—particularly his interest in genetics and posthumanist theory—inform his exploration of how the human body might change and merge with the non-human world.
Visually, Bengtsson draws inspiration from the Pre-Raphaelites, Art Nouveau, Danish Golden Age painting, Renaissance imagery and historical biological illustrations. Despite his young age, Bengtsson has already exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions at Mendes Wood DM in São Paulo and Brussels, Public Gallery in London and Andersen’s Contemporary in Copenhagen. In 2025, he also presented his first institutional solo exhibition at O—Overgaden in Copenhagen.
