Kazuma Koike

Kazuma Koike is a Japanese contemporary artist, born in Kanagawa in 1980 and currently living and working in Osaka. He spent parts of his childhood in Buenos Aires and Barcelona before studying sculpture at Nihon University College of Art in Tokyo.
Koike works across ceramic sculpture, painting and drawing, and is particularly known for his mysterious black ceramic figures. His sculptures often resemble ancient idols, archaeological objects or mythical creatures, yet they do not belong to any identifiable culture or historical period.
A central idea in Koike's practice is the creation of "fictional ancient artifacts." He combines imagery from different cultures, places and periods—including ancient gods, large cats, plants and other symbolic forms—to create objects that appear as though they have been discovered from an unknown civilisation. His dark clay and glazes also reference the appearance of traditional Japanese ceramics.
His work has been exhibited internationally in Japan, Hong Kong, Paris, New York and Denmark. In 2023, he presented Stille, a two-person exhibition with Danish artist Henrik Godsk at HAGD Contemporary in Aalborg, and his work has subsequently appeared in further HAGD exhibitions and at Untitled Art Miami Beach.
