Grgur Akrap

Grgur Akrap is a Croatian contemporary painter, born in Zagreb in 1988, where he continues to live and work. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb, in 2013 and has become a distinctive figure in the younger generation of Croatian painters.

Akrap is known for his richly coloured, expressive and often dreamlike paintings. His works frequently feature mythological figures, wild animals, human forms and mysterious landscapes, creating scenes that seem to exist somewhere between reality, dreams and ancient mythology.

Colour plays a central role in his work—not simply as decoration, but as a way of expressing emotion, psychological states and symbolic meaning. Thick layers of paint and energetic brushwork give his paintings a strong physical presence, while references to myths, legends and archetypal imagery create a sense of timeless storytelling.

Akrap has increasingly gained international recognition, exhibiting across Europe, Asia and the United States. His solo exhibitions include Garden of Beasts at HAGD Contemporary in Aalborg in 2023, False Prophet at The Hole in New York in 2025, and exhibitions with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery in 2026. HAGD Contemporary also presented his solo exhibition All-knowing with Flower in Aalborg in August 2026
