Marko Zeman

1975
Marko Zeman is a Croatian contemporary artist, born in Zagreb in 1975, where he continues to live and work. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, graduating in 2010, and today also teaches at the Academy.

Zeman works primarily with painting, but his practice also includes drawing, collage and posters. His work is characterized by an interest in the physical process of painting—experimenting with materials, layers, forms and compositions and allowing the work to develop intuitively rather than following a fixed plan.

A recurring theme in his work is the transformation of ordinary, everyday life into something visually unexpected. Cups, plants, food, figures, domestic objects and simple human situations become the subjects of expressive compositions, often accompanied by a subtle sense of humour and playfulness.

Earlier works also drew inspiration from comic books, film, music and literature, while collage and graphic elements have remained important parts of his visual language. His paintings often balance recognizable imagery with abstraction, creating works that feel spontaneous, energetic and slightly unpredictable.

Zeman has exhibited regularly since 2008 and received an award at the 7th Croatian Biennial of Painting in 2024. His works are held in several Croatian public and private collections. He is also represented by HAGD Contemporary in Aalborg
